The Polk Monitor 7 was Matthew Polk's first successful speaker, and has since become a legend. It is often regarded as one of the finest speakers Polk Audio has ever made. Matthew Polk himself even confessed to the Monitor 7 being the best in their Monitor lineup.
The design is quite simple, with a soft silver coil dome tweeter, a 6.5" woofer, and 10" passive weighted radiator — but the sound is anything but simple.
The soundstage is full and wide, the treble is clear but not fatiguing and the bass is responsive and tight without being boomy. The balance is just right with these speakers, and their excellent efficiency means that you don't need to throw a ton of power at them for them to sound great. I use a Topping TP20 MKII amplifierand it sounds absolutely phenomenal.
The Monitor 7 is getting harder to come by, but sets in good quality do show up fairly often. Polk sold quite a few of these for many years, so they're definitely not impossible to find. One thing to note, however, is that the internal crossovers will likely need to be re-capped if they haven't been already. The capacitors dry out and can cause problems or simply sound bad, so I highly recommend spending about $50 on new capacitors to bring them up to speed.
If you're in the market for an incredible set of vintage speakers, keep your eyes peeled for a pair of Monitor 7s. If you find a pair, snatch them up without hesitation and consider yourself lucky!
